How local is Local?

The average American meal travels 2000 miles from farm to table.
When I am in grocery stores I have noticed some produce is marked with 'Grown in USA'. If I buy bananas grown in California, that is not local food. It is as eye opening to look at WHERE the food was grown or made, just as it is important to look for WHAT is in processed food in ingredient lists. This map shows the 3000/500/250/100 radius of land around Brooklyn, New York. Zoom in to see the places to look for when buying food.
The closer the better.
