Anella
222 Franklin St., Brooklyn, NY 11222
718-389-8100 Tue-Thu, 5:30pm-10pm; Fri, 5:30pm-11pm; Sat, 10am-4pm and 5:30pm-11pm; Sun, 10am-4pm and 5:30pm-10pm; Mon, closed anellabrooklyn.com
Anella opened in the spring of 2009, quickly establishing its reputation as a solid Greenpoint joint with a knack for slightly upscale comfort food like brick oven-pizzas and olive oil mashed potatoes. But in early 2010, Chef Joe Ogrodnek took over the reins, launching the restaurant from reliable neighborhood standby to Brooklyn standout. Ogrodnek favors bold, classic flavors: tangy short ribs and a rich, tender pork cassoulet share space on the menu with more creative fare like sweet carrots served with fluffy whipped ricotta. But it's the little touches that propel his homey dishes into new terrain: the generous helping of fennel on the potato-crusted cod, a scoop of ever-so-slightly tart buttermilk ice cream paired with a chocolate bread-pudding, or candied orange peel served atop the lemon tart. Even the bread, baked and served in terracotta flowerpots, is magnificently rich and salty. The wood-paneled space is warm and inviting, ideal for stretching out for a long, late-morning feast (at brunch, the pastry basket with homemade jam never disappoints). In nice weather, the backyard garden opens, a cozy spot to sip a cocktail or linger over dinner.

501 11th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 Tel: 718-768-2044 http://applewoodny.com/
An understanding of simplicity and a respect for the natural flavors of fresh and organic ingredients drive Applewood's seasonal menu. This observance of seasonality results in a menu that is in constant change - dishes may come at go at a weekly and even daily frequency. Yet, in light of this turnover, Applewood's commitment to serving all-natural fare remains constant. All meat dishes at Applewood are entirely free of antibiotics and hormonal supplements. Moreover, there is a very good chance that at any one time the menu will feature several dishes that include grass-fed, pasture-raised, and even organic meats. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m.  Brunch is served Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Diner
85 Broadway, Brooklyn, NY 11211 Tel: (718) 486-3077 http://www.dinernyc.com
The Diner was opened on December 31st, 1998 by friends Mark Firth and Andrew Tarlow. After years of living on the South Side and having nowhere to eat, drink, or hang out nearby, they decided to open their own little place, and took over the lease of the 1920's Kullman Diner car one block away from their home. They spent 6 months in construction, stripping away multiple bad renovations, and inches of fryer grease. Miraculously, through the recommendation of a mutual friend, they met and had dinner with Caroline Fidanza. She talked about a menu comprised of seasonal, simple ingredients, and hearty stews, and they agreed on the spot that she should be the Chef. Months of sheetrocking, painting, and tiling went by, and they never got to try her food. Opening night they threw a huge dinner for all of the friends and family who had helped them open up, with Caroline cooking. She made Cassoulet, with a small simple watercress salad, followed by a hard sheep cheese and Quince paste, and finally a chocolate rum cake. It was the best meal that they had ever had, and in a state of disbelief that she was to be the Chef of their little Diner, they opened up the next day. They started with a small menu of Goat Cheese Salad, Beet Salad, Green Salad, Soup, Burger, Skirt Steak, and Roast Chicken, and the three of them have been serving a variation of that same menu with a long list of Specials ever since.
Eat Café
124 Meserole Ave. , Brooklyn, NY 11222
eatgreenpoint.com
This small café and record shop specializes in seasonal, locally sourced food as much as it does in classic-rock and indie vinyl. The menu changes daily and focuses on non-fussy dishes that showcase fresh ingredients, from seafood caught in Hampton Bays to organic vegetables from the Catskills. Dinner is offered à la carte, but the $20–$25 (tax included) three-course prix fixe is a serious deal. First courses might include seasonal soups or hearty crostini topped with vegetable purées, entrées range from vegetarian-friendly pastas to free-range chicken or grass-fed beef, and the final course is a daily dessert special. Lunch is a lighter affair, with a menu of sandwiches, salads, and frittatas, as well as a $12 menu for two small plates. Breakfast and brunch offerings cover all the bases (housemade granola and yogurt, pancakes, polenta), with the occasional experimental dish thrown in (an egg-based bánh mì). The décor is touched with rustic accents that lend an urban-farmhouse vibe, like jam-jar water glasses and chalkboards instead of menus. The long, narrow room has clusters of two- and four-tops near the front and an open kitchen in the rear, with bins of used records between. Diners pass through the tiny food-prep area to access communal tables in the back garden

Frankies 457
457 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231 Tel: 718-403-0033 http://www.frankiesspuntino.com
Frankies is a unique restaurant with a fresh approach to the lighter side of Italian cooking. Frank and Frank hold on to a nostalgic love of the old ways they learned to revere in their grandparents' kitchens—sausages made in storied butcher shops the same way for over 100 years and vegetables sold by the neighborhood's push cart grocer. But they are also dedicated to serving fresh, healthy, local, humanely raised fare. To lend an old world flavor to their modern Italian cooking, Frank and Frank established relationships with local butchers, delis, cheesemongers, coffee purveyors, organic grocers and brewmasters who are similarly dedicated to old-school quality.  Sunday through Thursday: 11 am - 11 pm Friday & Saturday: 11 am - Midnight

http://jamesrestaurantny.squarespace.com/
James calls itself "a seasonal American restaurant with Old-World European influences," and it is something of an Old World dream come true in Brooklyn for Bryan Calvert (once personal chef to Susan Sontag and Annie Liebovitz) and his wife Deborah Williamson. Mr. Calvert being a Bouley alumnus, those influences lean toward the French - purees, reductions, confits, beurre blancs - but the produce leans toward the local, including fresh herbs from the couple's own garden.

Lodge
318 Grand at Havemeyer, Brooklyn, NY 11211 Tel: 718 486 9400 http://www.lodgenyc.com
The idea for Lodge restaurant grew out of a series if ideas shared during the re-construction of a nineteenth century adirondaack camp. Comfortable, ample meals were served in an open shack and the food was cooked over a hardwood fire on a shopping cart-turned-grill. Most of the ingredients were sourced from local hunters and local farms. Lodge restaurant was built in that same spirit with wood from that same Adirondack lot. In 2007 the partners from Lodge opened Urban Rustic, a market cafe and grocery dedicated to locally produced and organic foods. With the relationships we've built with local farmers and providers, we are now able to offer an increasing array of regionally grown and sustainably produced food at Lodge.

Mimi’s Hummus
1209 Cortelyou Road Brooklyn, NY 11218 (718) 284-4444 mimishummus.com
It is diminishing to call Mimi’s a hummus joint, even though that’s what it calls itself. That’s because the tiny, charming spot is capable of so much more (not to take anything away from the hummus, which happens to be nutty and rich, creamy and delicious, in all five variations; $8 and $9). Our best advice: Heed the specials. Especially if they happen to be a ground-lamb pie baked in a skillet and strewn with parsley and pine nuts, served with a tangy tomato salad; or a tart and lemony Iraqi beet soup showcasing plump farina dumplings filled with beef. Mimi herself has become a neighborhood fixture, especially among the toddler set, who seem drawn as much to the chef’s sunny disposition as to the jar of homemade peanut-butter cookies she keeps on the counter.

We hope to share with you how delicious All Natural and Healthy can be, and how beautiful, functional and economically feasible eco-friendly can be. We know we surely are not and are not claiming to be but we want to do our part while being a realistic business model. And using one corn cup or recycling one bottle may not seem like a big deal but imagine the collective long-term impact if everyone contributed a small part.  Doing something is 100% better than doing nothing. We'd like to share with you the possibilities we've discovered and invite you to be contagious!" Roberta’s
261 Moore St., Brooklyn 718-417-1118 robertaspizza.com
Can two hip musicians versed in punky blues rock find fulfillment as artisanal pizza-makers in Bushwick? Owned by Chris Parachini (on bass) and Brandon Hoy (on keyboards), the pizzeria is in a forlorn part of Brooklyn filled with gritty factories, warehouses, and lofts. The restaurant, housed in a former garage, has wood-paneled walls, elongated wood tables, and mismatched captain’s chairs. Out back is a patio with additional seating and a rusting Mercedes-Benz sedan studded with flowerpots. The pizza, made in a wood-burning oven, is Neapolitan in inspiration and technique. The crusts are admirably airy and crispy, and the mozzarella homemade—but the tomato sauce could be richer and more assertive. There are nearly two dozen toppings, with unusual choices like taleggio cheese, capers, and tuna. The combo pizzas remove the guesswork: The guanciale and egg has delicious shavings of house-cured pork jowl surrounding an egg that has set perfectly, and the R.P.S. aptly balances peppery sorpresa with mellow roasted red peppers.

Tiny Cup
279 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216 Tel: 718-399-9200
Organic, market-fresh ingredients, fair trade coffee, baked good made in house, vegan friendly.
"Owner and neighborhood resident Lisa Bayer is a former personal chef, and her menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches is above par...obsessive with regard to ingredients (the roast-beef-and-Fontina panini are yanked from the menu on days when the beef isn't just-dead)...But Bayer's Tiny Cup still reflects the neighborhood's unfussy appeal (she says she "prefers red-velvet cake to eclairs"). Last weekend, the sign out front read "come in and meet your neighbors," and folks did indeed line up along the cafe's indoor picnic table for free cupcakes. The seventies-retro decor is even accidentally chic - Bayer simply went thrift-store shopping for furniture to match one burnt-orange loveseat that she loved. As for the coffee, it's a good, strong medium-blend from a direct trade company called Intelligentsia." - New York Magazine
